CAMERON HIGHLANDS
Cameron highlands, situated in the north-western corner of the state
of Pahang is one of the eleven districts in the state of Pahang,
Malaysia. It is located at approximately 4°30'N, 101°30'E
and at an altitude of 1,829meters. The population of Cameron Highlands
ia approximately 30,000. Cameron Highlands is the largest and most
genteel of the hill resorts in Malaysia. The temperate climate of
the Cameron Highlands has made it Malaysia's 'Green Bowl,' supplying
cabbages, tomatoes, carrots, green peppers and lettuce to major
cities in Malaysia. Tea and strawberries are also grown on the terraced
slopes of the Cameron Highlands. A good place to get away from the
tropical heat. With a temperature range of between 10 and 23°C
and not a great deal of humidity.
Much of the character of the Cameron Highlands has remained unchanged
since colonial times, and in many ways it is at hill stations like
the Cameron Highlands that British residents most determinedly recreated
an idyllic English Countryside’s environment. Tudor inns and
rose gardens are the most visible reminders of English colonials.
The primary activities in the Cameron Highlands are all emphatically
relaxing, touring, dining, shopping, and golfing. Among the most
popular sights are the area's tea plantations and strawberry farms,
its lovely rose gardens and waterfalls, and the busy market square
at Brinchang. The highland's 18-hole, par-71 golf course is open
to the public.
Cameron Highlands is about 3½ hour drive from Kuala Lumpur.
The cool and fresh air on the highlands offers an attractive retreat
for city dwellers, and other visitors.
Cameron Highlands is famous for its tea plantation, such as the
Bharat Tea Estate, Boh Tea Plantation, Vegetable Farm, Sungai Palas
Tea Estate, and Fruit Farms. The hills here are fertile, and perfect
for plantations. Mountain hiking is one of the enjoyable activities.
Each part of the highlands combines individual charm and attractions,
for a memorable holiday.
HISTORY OF CAMERON HIGHLAND
It was in 1885 that a government surveyor named William Cameron
who stumbled upon this mossy plateau whilst surveying the mountain
range. Cameron described this find as ‘a fine plateau with
gentle slopes, shut in by lofty mountains’. However, he apparently
mentioned little else about his discovery and it wasn’t until
the 1920’s that the plateau was finally and officially placed
on the map. Soon after the clearing of the forests began, tea planters
came and claimed lands for their plantations. Cameron highlands
was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1962.
CLIMATE
Camerons sits on an altitude of between 4875feet(1609m) and 5850feet(1930m).
Temperatures can drop to about 24ºC at night and it is not
uncommon to see log fireplaces in living rooms and even bedrooms
of cottages built during the colonial days.
Cameron Highlands today is a popular destination for local holidaymakers,
Singaporeans and people from all over the world. As a result of
the influx of visitors hotels, motels, resorts and service apartments
have mushroomed in recent years. Boh plantation serves up more than
65% of the Malaysian tea market and is the biggest local tea producer
with a total 8,000 acres of tea plantation in Palas, Farlie, Bukit
Cheeding, Ringlet.
