Selangor Darul Ehsan

Selangor Darul Ehsan, approximately 8,000 sq. km in area is made up of the following districts, Klang, Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor, Sabak Bernam, Ulu Langat, Hulu Selangor, Petaling, Gombak, Sepang and Putrajaya. It extends along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia between the state of Perak and Negri Sembilan. Its advantageous geographic position and rich natural resources have made Selangor Darul Ehsan the most prosperous state in Malaysia. Today it has the distinction of being the most populated state in Malaysia, with about 4.0 million inhabitants.

Selangor is the heartland of the nation, it is the most developed in the country, it has the largest port and airport, it houses most institutions of higher learning in Malaysia, it's infrastructure and communications facilities are among the best in the region, Selangor is also one of the most fascinating and scenic destinations in Malaysia, providing visitors a delightful, never-ending discovery. Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Putrajaya and The multi Media Super Corridor, Cyberjaya are all located in the State of selangor. With a bustling economy of agricultural, industrial, commercial and tourism activities, Selangor a home of diversity of people makes Selangor a melting pot of culture, language, art, music and cuisine.

History of Selangor Darul Ehsan

Selangor's history dates back to the 16th century, when rich tin deposits were found in the region. The area's natural wealth, attracted miners, immigrants and colonizers. One especially important group of settlers were the Bugis, a Malay people from Macassar in Celebes. Renowned for their capabilities as sea traders and warriors, the Bugis soon rose to prominence in Selangor. By 1700 they dominated the state both politically and economically and had established the present Sultanate of Selangor. Over the course of the eighteenth century, Selangor extended its sphere of influence to become a regional political power. As the western colonial presence increased over the following century, in-fighting between the Bugis, Chinese and Malay nobility forced Selangor to accept the presence of a British Resident in 1874. Unsurprisingly, this foothold in the prosperous state's administration proved out to be rather obstinate. In 1896, the British included Selangor in the Federated Malay States, at about the same time that rubber cultivation began in Malaysia. In 1948 the state joined the Federation of Malaya. In 1957 the Federation became an independent state within the Commonwealth of Nations. In 1974, the country's capital city of Kuala Lumpur and some of the surrounding areas were ceded to the Federal Government for the establishment of Wilayah Persekutuan, a Federal Territory.

Today Selangor is Malaysia's richest and most developed state. It is home to the largest port in the country, The South Port, North Port and West Port. Total berth capacities when fully completed will be 16 kms long, to provide supply driven facilities to cater to the projected 90 million tonnes of cargo by the year 2010. Many of the country's largest industrial operations, found particularly in the Klang Valley, Selangor Darul Ehsan. Its highly diversified economy ranges from agriculture, industry, and commerce to tourism. While industry is rapidly expanding, the mainstays of the state's economy remain rubber and palm-oil.
