social hub comprises an exciting mix of 130 shops, 30 food and beverage
outlets, 140 kiosks, cinemas, an exhibition corner which regularly
showcases exhibitions and promotions of arts and culture, and an
outdoor riverside amphitheatre where free cultural performances
are staged. Part of the mezzanine floor has been tranformed into
a typical Malay kampung (village), housing traders specialising
in traditional crafts like tekad (gold embroidery), songket (a rich
fabric interwoven with gold threads), sutera asli (natural silk),
batik, Kelantan silverware and Malay antiques. It is a wonderful
site for visitors to discover the richness and heritage of the Malay
people. A favourite place for souvenir and gifts, the many shops
and kiosks in Central Market sell an assortment of Malaysian handicraft,
personalised T-shirts, costume jewellery, trinkets, delicate glass
blown objects, ceramics, pottery, attractive batik scarves and apparel,
traditional costumes, local snacks and delicacies, footwear, silver
and gold jewellery, portraits and paintings, pewter, perfumes, watches,
cameras and other interesting items. Great food is an integral component
of Malaysian life and you may be in a quandary as to which to try
out as the se-lection offered here is wide. Tantalising hot Indian
curries, spicy Malay dishes, heavenly Chinese cuisine, popular Western
fare and Malaysian treats are found on the mezzanine floor. There
are several watering holes on the embankment where you can unwind
with a drink and tasty pub snacks. At the northern end is the brightly
coloured Central Market Annexe which houses cinemas, cafes, fast-food
outlets, galleries and boutiques.
